Passenger side mirror discolored
Has anybody else experienced this? I found 1 post in the A4 forum, but someone stated that it couldn't be fixed without buying a $200 dealer replacement glass. I pulled it apart yesterday, cleaned the goo that was between the glass and first surface mirror, and reassembled with some epoxy with good success. My only fear is that it will develop moisture between the surfaces. There were also twopairs of wires. One plugged into the center for heating I assume, and the other pair went to conductors around the perimeter. I don't know what these are for, auto dimming maybe, but they were damaged as a result.
It's not really a mirror, like you think, it's coated glass. Your coating is coming off. You need to put in new mirror glass. I believe you can get it much cheaper from other sources online.
Actually, every mirror is coated glass with a protective clear glass covering. The difference here is that the cover came off exposing the "first surface" mirror or coated glass. This is very fragile and can easily be scratched. You have to carefully clean off the yellow goo inside and reassemble with the clear glass cover. Mine looks very good and is working fine.
I searched high and low for a replacement glass. Every time I found one, my order would be cancelled due to availability. My last attempt was a glass provider on Ebay, but that fell through because he couldn't match the exact size.
