Default Possible S4 purchase?

I have the chance to purchase a 2001 S4 that has light front end damage. They are asking 4,200 for it and I called and talked to the guy he said they'd go down to 3900 but I'm going to try and talk them down a bit more. It has 116k on it, and it still runs. It does appear to need one of the intercoolers but maybe a FMIC would be added instead? Anyways I'm just wondering your guys thoughts on this, my wife seems to like the idea as it's a car I've wanted for quite some time. Basically it doesn't look like there is any frame damage, seems to be all panels, the hood quarter panel (left side) and bumper all need replaced. I'd really like to get it for 3500 as that's my comfort zone with money at this point in time.

So what I'm wondering is a couple things, firstly the hood, quarter panel, and bumper/support/ so on basically I want to just get a front end off something, are they all the same as the A4? I was thinking I'd get the parts from an A4 as they are easier to find. I'd likely just get the radiator core/bumper support and all that from the A4 and then get an RS4 cover for it.

The following year I'd rebuild the engine and upgrade the turbo's likely since it does have over 100k on it's clock. I imagine I should probably do the timing belt soon though because who knows when it was changed.

the bumper isnt the same, not sure about the rest though, and when you get it, replaced every friggin hose and clamp in the engine bay... all junk, mine pop off alllllllll the time stalling the engine in very inconvenient places, requiring a screw driver and patience lol

Good luck to you, the 2001 s4 is problem ridden!

The basic layout of the S4 and A4 are similar. But when it comes to the intercoolers, and radiator its different. My father and I both have B5s, except I have the S4 and he has an A4. So from first hand experience I can tell you that they are very close. Fenders and the hood are the same. Headlights may be slightly different since A4s tend to lack HIDs, and the S4s have them built into the housing. Just PM me if you have any questions, I will do my best to get back with you.

If the front end has damage you will almost certainly need a radiator frame support (also known as the lock carrier) along with new fenders, hood, headlamps, bumper, crash shocks/beam, radiator, fans, and possible harness repairs. If a body shop/mechanic took care of all these things you're looking at $8,000 easy, not to mention all the maintenance the 2.7T plunders your wallet with.
If you can stomach all that, and have the time to play with it, then 3,500 would be a good price for it.
