Possible Serious Problem. Need help ASAP!
I start my car after work, let it warm up for about ten minutes then drive home. The only thing odd I notice is that as I was slowing at a red light (about down to 10 mph) the light turned green and I then pushed on the gas normally, the odd thing was it kinda seemed like it hesitated a bit then jerked forward a bit with the throttle. Then I get home, put it in park and something didn't sound right. I look at the shifter, it's in park but the computer and car read it's in nothing (the space between park and reverse in tiptronic cars is when it reads reverse) When I put it in reverse it says it's in neutral, when I put it in drive, it says it's in 4th and so on. What the trash is going on???
I had it in and they took out the tranny to replace the torque converter is it possible they messed something up? I can't get ahold of them now because they are closed for the night.
I need to figure out what's up soon because I have to leave for work at 4:20am tomorrow.
PLEASE HELP!
2000 Audi S4 tiptronic
recent work includes random adjusting of the computer to get it tuned right for the car and not trip the EPC light, replacing the torque converter and many other small non engine related things.
I have not driven it cold since I got it, or hard in weeks.

I would not let the car warm up, it's not good for the car.
Now the display said it's in reverse, but the lever is in neutral? Is the car in fact in reverse, or is it in neutral?
If it's working, then I would not worry to much about what the display is saying. There might be a problem with the switch in the sifter.
So if the shifter is in R & you go backwards, don't worry about it to much.
Does it go into TIP mode?
What did they "adjust" on the computer?

Okay first of all how is letting the car warm up bad? I thought that was good? Please explain!
Also adjusting means the cleverly programmed the car for a 1.8T I4 A4 with a temp dash they gave me, they put the new S4 dash in and left the A4 programming in there, so they adjusted that.
When the shifter says "N" the car is actually in drive and so on. I can start it in neutral. Just did that. Upon talking with the dealer and others it seems to be a linkage issue. They replaced the gearbox before I bought the car and took the tranny out to replace the torque converter so it's probably a combo of the two things and just some more adjusting is needed I have a bay and techs waiting for me at the service shop whenever I roll in. He assured me I could drive it just fine So I am doing that tomorrow.
also please lemme know about this letting the car warm up and it being bad.

The car runs rich when it's cold. This dumps in extra fuel. Since the engine is cold, it can lead to carbon deposits, & it also puts more fuel in the oil.
It takes long for the car to warm up at idle, & waste fuel.
Just start your car wait 30 seconds for fluids to start circulating then just drive under normal throttle but do not hit boost untill your warmed up. I have a tip also and have never heard of this problem before. Kind of wierd. If you cant get help here try serching audi world they have tons and tons of info there good luck and i wouldnt worrie to much about major damage. it seems like when they messed with your comp they might have switched some stuff around
Ah, I was under the impression that letting it warm up is better, that is what I have heard for a long time. Now I will just do like 30-60 seconds. Also, went back to the dealer, started it in "N" and drove there with no problem. They say they replaced some rubber bushing when the reinstalled the tranny and they compressed as normal, but it abnormally messed up the linkage, but it's all fixed now and running well.
So it seems to be a very rare problem that shouldn't happen unless you are me.

I usually let it warm up for about 10 minutes because its -15 here and I like the car to be a little warmer when I get in. I hope that isent too bad.

20-30 sec is fine, but leaving it idle for 10min, that's not good.
Honestly you're the first to ever tell me that, but it makes sense with the explanation. I won't do it again, but I'll get a boost gauge soon now to be sure to keep it out of boost until it's warmed up after being driven.
