Default S4 for me?

I'm looking to find out some information on the S4 and advice from you guys. I have a couple of requirements in a car, and I think the S4 can meet them, but I'll let you guys tell me.

I'm looking for 4 doors and decent handling. This car will be a daily driver, but I also want to hit sub 13's in the 1/4.
At present I'm looking at spending around $20k (which means 2000, 2001 model years), but I'm not expecting those quater mile times right away either.

So, what kind of mods would I be looking at to reach those 1/4 times (if I can at all) and what are the costs associated?
What kind of reliabilty would I have?

I'm asking the same questions about the BMW M3 (the last year the M3 was a 4 door was 1998 so that's kind of a minus) in a BMW forum. Try to be as honest as possible, but I guess I'll probably take everything with a grain of salt, and I'm sure you're all passionate about your cars (as am I) and will probably all tell me to get the S4 over the M3

Also, are there any other cars that you guys can think of that might meet my needs? Some I know suggested a '96 Impalla SS, but I'm not sure about the handling on the car...and I'm not sure I want a car that big. An LT1 under the hood is enticing though.

Thanks for everyone's advice in advance.

S4 is the way to go all the way with the amazing design the suberb handling the implala is going to handle lke a boat and you don't want me to even get started on how much I hate BMW's haha but to get the S4 into 13's is not hard at all all you will need to add is a $600 chip that ups the boost and fuel pressure timing all that good stuff you might want to change your diverter valves at the same time they are also pretty cheap looking at $100 each X 2 but that will put you into the 13's for sure also depends on how much youn have to spend on upgrades you can get these cars into 11's with some cash haha have fun

and remember no BMW's

I'm not looking for 13's though, I'm looking for 12's (sub 13's) I'm kind of a goal driven person, and my goal is sub 13, so 12.99 is fine. What's it gonna take to get me there? I love driving sticks, so I would be driving a manual.

I suspect with a $20K overall budget it may be difficult to get under 13 sec 1/4s. You may want to look into used Jetta's or GTIs with the 1.8 turbo - you'll be starting out cheaper and with less wieght then an S4 and their is plenty of performance to be had by chipping and getting larger turbos, downpipes, exhaust etc. I've seen claims of mid 11 sec 1/4s for some of these beasts....!
