S4 trade-in vs. private sale
hey yall. i've got a 2005.5 B7 S4 avant 6-speed, fully loaded, and am thinking about going to the rs4. any thoughts on what i should expect for a trade in vs. a private sale?
thanks.
thanks.
If you're really gonna sell the S4 the dealer is gonna try and give you below bottom price for it so selling it by yourself is your best bet. On the other hand its really hard to sell a car privately that costs so much, most people don't have 20k+ money on hand. I would keep the S4 in my opinion un-less you know a rich kid that wants it. Otherwise your gonna lose a few thousand dollars.
Kelly Blue Book value on a 2005.5 S4 Avant w/40k on the clock (Don't know what your's has) came in at $35,750 in the Youngstown OH area. I'm pretty certain that unless it's thrashed that you can expect to sell it for about $31k-$33k. I paid $29k for my 2004 S4 sedan w/45k on the clock in April. They have pretty decent resale value.
it's got 31,3xx miles. great, near perfect condition. standard service + couple extra oil changes in between 20K and 30K. no mechanical issues. here are some pics. i live in california.

Dealers will only give you wholesale value or around what they can get the same car at auction for. The whole point is for the dealer to go & sell it for high BB value to make money on.
They usually do not car about milage, condition, mods or maintaince much, unless it's in their favor to give you less money.
If they say they are giving you more money for the car, they are just adding it to the new car price, or giving you a slightly lower price on the new car. Sometimes they even roll the trade in extra into the new car payment.
You will ALWAYS get screwed with a trade in. No matter what, you will get less money then selling it on the street. It's the connivence of it that makes it's attractive.
Case in point, I sold my old M3 for over $35k, trade in value was $4000. When I traded in my old BMW 525 for the S4, they gave me $3500 for it, I could have sold it in a day for $8000.
