Default s4 v8 reliability...

I am looking into buying one of the s4's with the v8's.

i would need one with around 50,000 miles on it. does anybody have any idea about how reliable one of these would be? I have a 1.8t a4 and it sucks, i bought it with too many miles from a shatty caretaker. SO i was thinkin v8 s4. Any of you guys have any bad experiences that you hvae had or know of with these cars? what expected maintanence? ect anything would help!

many thanks
Kevin

[KSU]KEvin, this and other reliability related questions (about the S4) have been asked gazillion times. Nevertheless, here is something you can do:

1) Go to https://www.audiforums.com
2) Scroll down
3) Do you see "S Car Model Line"
4) Click on it!
5) Look at the 4th sticky (from top to bottom; Sticky: S4 FAQ)
6) Click on the link!
7) Enjoy reading

OR

Use the "Look, Read & Discover" aka Search function in the forum. However, this may be too complicated...

All powerful and wise,

the S4 FAQ have very little relating to the v8 versions of the s4 specifically.

The search function yeilds very little as to reliability, mainly just saying it was a little more reliable than the b5 s4's. I want to know about the b6/b7 ones. such as what specific problems ones have had that have cost a lot. I did use the search function and i did read the FAQ.

so be a douche a little bit more, but any help would still be greatly appreciated. maybe a FAQ regarding the newer models of s4's may be in order.
Or would that be too complicated....

"There really to new to have a lot of "normal" problems, and most are still under warranty.
So far B6's in general seam to have much fewer problems then the b5.
Give it another 2-3years, and all the evil Demons will start to show up."
2k S4

"that v8 is very reliable. just stay on top of the maintenenance. the most common problem ive seen is with second gear synchro. its not really the cars fault but operator error. speed shifting with that many ponies will always be bad if you mis clutch."
rayveedub

"I have had my Audi S4 4.2 V8 Tiptronic Sports Car for about 8 months and have already covered over 20k miles and every one was a pleasure. There are not many cars that can do everything like the new S4; corner well, accelerate very quickly, cruise on the motorway all day and give you the reasurance of the German Build Quality. I know there are faster cars, that are cheaper but for a seriously quick car that you can use everyday, the S4 (in my opinion) wont be matched. Very quick, Discrete, 4WD is awsome and top notch build quality."
from reviewcentre

"4.2L is a tank. i have 28k on mine, zero issues (knock on wood)"
from vwvortex

"As someone who just moved from a '91 200TQ to a '92 S4 I must say that I
like the S4 more and more everyday. It sort of depends on what you want.
The V-8 is definitely the way to go for the cruiser, but for acceleration,
handling, reliability, etc. I would say the S4 is a winner. As far as
handling goes I don't think the V-8 comes close to the 51%/49% Front/Rear
weight distribution and the linear pull of the turbo is great. I simply
won't do the normally aspirated thing because I live in Denver where turbos
make a HUGE difference. The other thing is the aftermarket mods for the S4
are much more productive than those for the V-8s. One thing I will have to
say about the S4, though, is that I don't know who decided to redesign the
window and seat memory controls from the 200 but they should be shot!"

Forgive our s-car shenanigans, welcome to this sub section. Part of the problem is theres alot of S-cars these days (audis made 10 or so?) and unlike most forums we havent seperated the models, there just kinda lumped together. All in all weve got a vast majority of B5 s4's a few b6 and B7's. Sadly our FAQ covers only the B5.

Couple comments on the post above:

Never heard of synchro problems on a b6/b7, but almost every b5 owner will experience them so i think that post was made by a confused person

umm the 5th paragraph is about the URs4 so it has an inline 5 turbo. DIfferent car, no v8. I cant figure wtf hes talking about anyways so ignore that paragraph.

Now my .02:

the b6/b7 are very relyable. By that i mean there are no overly expensive common problems (asside from filling up the gas tank every couple days). They are naturally aspirated so theres alot less mechanical parts (turbos, wastegates, DVs bla bla bla) to get messed up. Problems will most likely occur from ABUSE not from flaws in the car itself. Its an audi so labor and parts are going to cost you IF somehting goes wrong, you may know that from your 1.8, allthough keep in mind twice the cylinders, twice the HP so its certainly not going to be less than your 1.8t.

Regular maintance is part of owning a car and some people refuse to believe that and completely neglect the car. There are expenses associated with running the car, and as this is a performance car (and is probably driven like one) maintinance costs are going to be higher than for instance a Camry.

Id think It should be cheaper and easier to maintain a 1.8t A4 too than a 4.2 S4.

i would like to agree with these guys about the fact that the v8 is very reliable.... it was built to be pretty bullit proof... but try to look out for an s4 with the CPO warranty.... i was lucky enough to have this warranty and not so lucky to have a very reliable s4... my car has had OVER 20 grand in repairs in the last two years(20,000 miles) so you never know... but you'll definelty sleep better knowing you have warranty... the car is awsome no doubt...

and this is NOT the a4 forum fellas... so stop being dicks to the newbies...especially if you are a newbie
