s4 better overall car... better interior, fit and finish...good performance, ride etc.
m3 better 'sports car' traditional rwd config, oversteer, more wow factor.
both great cars...I'm biased,,,I love my s4...I need to drive in the snow and I wanted 4 doors so no contest...s4!

I love S4's and M3's. But I just feel the M3 is more fun. I'm not a huge fan of 4 doors but when i need to get one it'll be an Audi.
There's no reason to bash a car as lovely as the M. Especially after "Top Speed" tested both cars on the track and the lesser horsepower 2 door won.

I hope you've also checked http://www.bimmerforums.com and http://www.m3forum.net both of these are full of post about this topic as well. Personally, as stated above, my decision was based mainly on 2 doors or 4. They are both very comparable cars in performance, and aesthetics. Personally I prefer the looks of the BMW but then again I'm bias. Don't get me wrong the S4 is a beautiful car with great handling.
Ask yourself these questions:
Does it snow where I live?
If so will this be a daily driver for me?
Do I like 4 doors better then 2?
And last but not least.
Do I want a car that will beat the S4 in top end?
I have to tell you, I just drove my M3 from Tampa, FL to the Jersey Shore and back last week. Wonderful ride, 150MPH is smooth as glass, and I would do it again in a heart beat.
