Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me a couple months back, and it is a really bad idea to drive the car if this actually is what happened. As far as spotting a problem, it depends on if your car is lowered or not. if you can actually see the tie rod end (it is the joint right behind the top or your wheel), then check what it looks like on the opposite side, and compare it to the messed up side. The wheel bearing though I don't think you can see. The wheel bearing is also made out of aluminum, so if you hit the rim itself, then all the force would have been transferred onto the wheel bearing, most likely bending it.
