Snow tires: need them or not?
I'm going up to Lake Tahoe up in Norcal in a couple days and I just wanted your opinions if I should get snow tires or not?
Heres my thinking: I dont' usually drive up to Lake Tahoe, so Im thinking buying snow tires would be a waste of money especially since i'll be changing my suspesion and new tires done in a coupel months. What I'm wondering is, if it'll be safe for me and my buddies to drive up there in my S4 sporting just snow chains and the Micheline Pzeros? |
RE: Snow tires: need them or not?
you dont even need snow chains....I have pilot sports on mine, and have no trouble in the michigan snow.

RE: Snow tires: need them or not?
Yea, what he said ^^. I've still got my Summer Performance tires still on and have no trouble in the snow. And I've been out and about when there were bad road conditions. I live in Michigan too.

My car was like driving on glass in the rain with my proxies. Turn any corner and end up sideways. Thats actually how i damaged a wheel

just dont drive like an idiot and you'll be fine. Im running Falken ZE-512's with 40% tread left (and none on the outside of the tire because I attack the roundabouts and cloverleaf every day on the way to work :D) and I do just fine. Just be careful stopping and leave yourself some extra room.

Probably not necessary for just a one time deal - if your careful and realize you might not be at your best traction. But for those who regularly drive in snow on summer performance tires - you are asking for major problems - really - not at all a good idea. Snow tires are the way to go in the winter in any place thats gets any kind of snow. I highly recommend Vredsteins.

No offense Roadhawk, but I know its not the smartest idea to drive on summer tires. But I'm in no big hurry to get some tires, when a good deal rolls around I'll snatch it up. Until then, I think that my common sense will help me out when it comes to driving in the winter. Not everyday in Michigan is there snow on the roads either, ice, possibly, but thats where cautious driving comes into play.

RE: Snow tires: need them or not?
Yes we can move forward in the snow just fine but keep in mind that stopping and turning is what will hurt you. If you got the money to spend either get chains or better yet a set of performance winter tires. I just picked up a set of Hankook W300 winter tires for $118 a tire so it wasn't that bad.
I live in a area that get very little snow but in the mountain pass get a ton of snow. So we have a lot of drivers that don't know jack how to drive in snow when going over the mountain passes. I know if I come in a snowysituation where I need to take some counter measure for other drivers stupidity I will be glad I had winter tires on. Better safe then sorry. https://www.audiforums.com/micons/m6.gif |
