Snow tires: need them or not?
thanks for the advice guys, I decided to NOT put on the snow chains and BOY were you guys right QUATTRO rocked!
Yeah i actually was taking I-80, kinda funny/sad thing happened, 2 of my buddies got into an accident (driving BMWs HAH) when i passed them totally unfazed
gotta love quattro for that
The only thing i didn't get the chance to test out is the effectiveness on ice? I'm pretty sure you michigan guys get alot more snow then up here in norcal but has anyone gone 60-90 on black ice around turns and such? I had friends in the car so I didn't want ta chance it but if the audi can handle it, i'm definitly up to scare some of my lady friends next time i head up

yea, nothing will beat ice...quattro will have no problems with snow, even with bad tires, but ice is a whole different ball game. unless you have ice skates, your basically screwed. trust me, we get lots of ice in MI, but thankfully there is lots of snow for traction on the ice!
i live in the chicagoland area and i don't really need snow tires, but once in a while we get a mix between snow, ice, slushy and POUNDS of salt. so i just mine for the hell of it. I dont want my BBS CH's getting all dirty and salty. Maybe even scratched if im drifting through the snow and you bump a curb haha. (hasnt happened yet knock on wood) But yeah i have my stock rims on, with GoodYear Ultra Grip Performance (winter)... They are really good tires when you dont have pure snow and you have a mix of everything
Here in the Netherlands you don't have to drive with Snow/Winter tyres but in Germany and Austria (Near by Holland!) you MUST have them or else you can get an heavy penalty...and in the worst case if you get an accident you're not insured!!
So I have Bridgestone Blizzak LM25 Winter tyres 18 Inch on RS6 Rims...I Have two sets Rims and wheels, one for the summer and one for the winter...Both kind of tyres from Bridgestone...

Probably best to get some snows on there though. The only advantage you have right now is that it's unlikely you'll get stuck and not be able to move forward, and you're less likely to spin (RWD) or understeer off the road under power (FWD). At least some decent all-seasons, but since all-seasons suck in the dry (and since it is usually dry in the bay area and you want half-decent performance tires) it's probably best to get GOOD road tires, and GOOD snow tires, and be done with it.
