Default Starting problem

Hello friends!
Rarely - about once a month or less - I'll turn the key to the START position, and hold it there while nothing happens for a few seconds...then just as I'm about to blurt out a profanity, the car starts as normal. I've got no dash "idiot lights". Battery voltage is normal. Outside temperature seems to have no effect. Once the car starts, everything is normal. Could it be the starter relay? If so, where would I locate this on the 2000 S4?

Thoughts?
Thanks!
Matt

Tip or 6 spd? My Manual had a clutch switch going out and this is what it did pretty much exactly did when it started to go .

Devil- You've come up with the same conclusion 3zero3 Motorsports came up with. They turned the key (with the car in neutral), THEN slowly started pressing in the clutch, and waited for the car to start - watching how far depressed the clutch pedal was. They said it's set at the right point - you don't need to stand on the pedal to start the car...BUT that doesn't mean the switch isn't having some intermittent failures. They said the switch is pretty hard to get to as well...but I don't think they knew they were talking to a stereo installer , and I'm used to fishing under the dash for wires.
