Default Stock wheel, wider tires?

I am sure this has been covered but I can't find it anywhere. I have ab6 S4 with stock 18inch wheels. I am shopping for some summers and wouldn't mind a little bit of a wider tire. Stock is 235/40...is 245/40 possible? Any side effects? Look stupid?

Thanks guys.

I had 18x8.5 rims on my 01 S4 and went with 225/40/18to keep it roughly the same. If you go wider it throws off your speedometer, and sometimes there are clearance issues...You can always call tire rack and get their opinion

with 8" i have 225's... if you have 8.5" you can def get 245's on there. whether its 225 or 245, the dolling diameter is going to be the size. only if you change to a bigger wheel, or the height of the tire is different.. ie... 225,35,18 or 225,40,18. that middle number is calculated by the ratio of the first number (225mm). so it's either 225mm x.35 or 225mm x .40. and of course we can all see that the 40 is going to yeild a larger number
