There has been much speculation for SUCH a long time about this stuff. I'm dissapointed too. Audi has a LONG history of turbocharging cars. I have no idea why they would suddenly change over to superchargers. BMW has their fantastic 3.5 liter turbo Inline-6 in the 1-series (which is an absolute screamer, 0-60 in 4.7! What!?!) and the 3-series. How can Audi honestly let BMW win the turbo war? BMW hasn't had a turbo performance car in decades, whereas Audi has consistantly had a turbo engine in their lineup at all times. The old Audi turbo I-5s can produce ridiculous power as can the 2.7/4.2 Twin Turbo. Moving to superchargers doesn't make any sense to me, especially considering Audi's extremely long history of turbocharging.
I love how these auto-makers make the argument that they are moving to superchargers for more low end torque. Did Audi forget the twin turbo motors they produced just a few years ago? The torque curve for the 2.7T was virtually flat, with peak torque arriving at 1850 RPM (!!!!!) and continuing in a steady curve from there. Gee, I guess you're right Audi, a supercharger is needed to cure this lack of low end torque. [:@]
This is exactly what ticks me off about these press releases. Audi should have just come out and said "We are supercharging because...*blah blah blah*." Instead, they came out and BSed that they are moving to superchargers for their low-end torque, when clearly more than enough torque was present to begin with and could have present with a properly designed turbo motor.
As much as I love Audi, my next car will have to be either a 4.2 RS4 or RS6. Or perhaps a *gasp* 135i Beemer? Supercharged Audi FTL. [sm=badidea.gif]
