I have a question along those lines. Is it possible to extend the range of the key fob. I saw some posts about repositioning the antena in the car but I have read forums for other cars and wireless devices and some had extended the range by opening the key fob and soldiering a longer antena or soldering it to a metal part that you touch when you push a button (which causes you to become part of the antena).

P.S. I tried holding it next to my head and all that happens was I looked like a Nut Job. Thanks.

Bump to find out the answer to the original question. I'd like to get a new key for my 2002, which I understand the dealer has to program. But will they be able to program that newer style for an older car?

Here is a DIY on extending your key fob range its only for B5 S4, havent tried it yet so I'm not sure if it works.

Yea u can add the new kefob, search the forums over at Audi world , and i believe u can use the trunk button if you have vagcom access. The only thing that maybe a issue is the newer Audis have a transponder in there so idk how that New Fob worked.

Bean thinking bout this for a wile too...

I have got the key fob with the 3 buttons that could do with replacing and was wanting to get the key fob from the B7 A4's - like the one pictured in ARI's link, coz it looks a bit newer and all, but the question is can the B7 key be programed by the dealer for a B5?

Also told by Audi parts that they go by u VIN when ordering keys and wat eva thay send is wat u get from Germany.

It really answered my above question [:'(]

Wanna increase the range of your key, press it up against your temple next to your eye and pres the button, i swear it doubles the range dunno why or how but it does try it out.
