What should i look for
Hey guys and gals, just want to say hey to all you guys and i look forward to contributing to this forum!
I am currently thinking of buying a 2000 or 2001 S4 and i really do not know a lot about Audi's as i have never owned one. The S4 is appealing to me as i really like the styling and the power is obviously a plus, also it has some luxury as well, great overall car.
Where i live (Canada) a 2000 or 2001 Audi S4 goes for around 28-30k! (Can afford that but don't think it would be wise) however after a quick search on the internet and ebay i see i can get them for around 12-15k US.
Long story a little shorter what should i be looking for as far as maintence and other concerns with this vehicle. i understand the timing belt must be replaced after 100k. Are there any major changes from the 2000 to the 2001 model year? any help would really be appreciated.

welcome and the timing belt/tentsioner/water pump is an issue with every multi valve engine because they are classed as interference engines and that means if it breaks there is a very good possibility the valve will strike the pistons, but don't ponder over that too much otherwise you will never buy a car, keep the service up to date and don't cut corners its not worth it in the end and good luck on your fine motor
Hey,
I recently went through the search process for an S4 so I have some insights from my recent search. One of the things I was looking for was the 6-SPD MAN. I test drove 3 manuals and two of the three had really notchy and rough shifting. The owners thought nothing of it. Being used to smooth audi Manuals I was a bit bothered but didn't really pay it enough attention. The third car I drove was very much like I was expecting. Super smooth shifts. We are talking butter smooth. I am pretty sure the synchros were going on the other two manuals. One of the owners was a 20 year old who definitely thrashed the car. I got him to talk about some of his exploits against evos and wrx's drifting entered the conversation, and I knew the car was going to require more maintenence. Anyway, just my 2cents. hope it helps if you are looking for a manual.

6 speed is for the motorway lol, some people see T on the back and see green lights forever and that's okish but you grow out of it
( caution when buying a performance car ) because that's what its meant for and life span could be half that of a standard car
nice init
