Your thoughts on the 2004 S4
Hey guys I'm new to this forum and actually new to Audi. I plan to be switching frommy bike (07 yamaha r6) to the S4. So I'm considering buying a 2004 S4 with 87,000 miles for a mere $22.900 which is still a good deal considering the original owner spent over 70 grand on the car. I know audi can be very high maintenance especially a sports sedan. The dealer I'm going through has no maintence records ect. but the car is in absolutely flawless condition and stilldrives very strong. My question to you is will I run into problems? and how expensive can those problems be? My friend who had worked with Audi for over 4 years said that the valve springs in the V8 would compress and blow up the valve but if the car already has 80k on it I shouldn't have that problem. He also mentioned something about the car having the grand service on it.. Also is it true the car runs on a lifetime timingchain instead of timing belts.. because changing belts would have been my main concern at 80k miles.I need your help! lol the car is also Automatic and the tiptronic seems to work great.
Thanks alot for listening!

I love my S4. My A4 gets better gas mileage, but it's an A4 with a 3.0 in it. The S4 is a sweet ride. Fast, precise and sophisticated. I would replace it with another one in a heartbeat if anything happened to it.
thanks alot yall. but yeah the V8's gas mileagewill probably get me living in a cardboard box but at least there will be a sweet *** S4 next to it. JETSPEED how much a hassle was it to replace those sensors or was it under warrenty?
I get about 17 mpg around town and on the highway about 25 mpg if I keep my foot out of it. My A4 gets about 20 mpgaround town and almost 30 mpg on the highway if I keep it around 65 mph.
it was under warranty.... but they are not hard to change...very easy to get too... and there is a trick to cleaning the maf is it is having problems... so if you are having a maf problem don't buy one yet! look on ebay for a self help packet on cleaning the maf(search for maf to find the help packet)....
This is my first post here.
I have been doing searches to find out the problems associated with the 2004 S4 because I just bought one this week and would like to get everything looked at before the warranty is up this fall.
I bought a Dolphin Gray '04 S4 with light grey interior, and I love it. It has 28K miles, and on my way home, the Check Engine light came on. I took it to Audi, and it was the Mass Air Flow sensor.
Anything BIG to worry about?
I hear an occasional "click" on the front left side.
Also, where the "OK" usually is in the middle of the dash, along with the other computer info, a lime green light came on....it looked like a headlight shining downward.
You are right, the gas sucks, but it is worth it. It has well thought out engineering.

any noise from the suspention you need to get checked out right away.... has the car ever been in an accedent? ... you have pretty low miles... sounds like someone either wrecked that car or drove it pretty hard, pretty often.
the light you see in the dash i'm pretty sure is your window washer fluid. check it out.
but welcome to the forums and you have good taste in cars

The telltale showing the headlamp symbolis the Dynamic Dimmer Control system. It is the system that stabilizes the headlamp adjustment. You should see the headlamps do their little up and down thing when you first turn on your lights. There is a control module that works with the leveling sensors in the headlamps. The control module or a leveler may have failed.
As for the Check Engine, I just got one this past week. I had the code dumped at Autozone and it came back with a defect in the Evaporative Emission Controls. I wonder if my gas cap has gone bad? I am taking my car in for service this Thursday. I'll soon know.
