On the 4.2L S4, a check valve stuck in the open position will drain hydraulic lifters and chain tensioners of oil when the engine is turned off, forcing the car to start with incorrect tolerances in the cylinder head.

A rattling sound heard during start up is a typical sign of check valve failure.
