What to do with S4 that needs new catalytic converters?
I have a 2001 S4 (manual) with around 120K miles on it. I'm ready to move on to my next vehicle, but check engine light recently came on and the dealer told me that the vehicle has one bad cat. and the other is "borderline" and quoted $4K to replace them . It's due for smog test in Sept.
The blue book value of this car is around $5700. I'm not sure if I'd be better off replacing the cats and then selling (for net return of $1700) or just selling the car "as is" to someone who can perhaps replace the cats more cheaply. If the latter, could I possibly get more than $1700? The car is in good shape otherwise. Any advice appreciated! Thanks, Rand (California) |
Buy the Cats on-line and get a muffler shop to install them..will be much cheaper. Audi dealers are a rip-off.

you could just buy some used downpipes from another manual s4 and swap them in. $200 or under for a good set.

Thanks for the suggestion.... sorry for my ignorance, but are the catalytic converters in the downpipes? So is it just a matter of swapping those out?
Thanks, Rand |
If I had a few extra grand sitting around, I would buy this from you and you wouldn't even need to worry about the cats.
But yes, the cats are in the downpipes. |
Have the rear o2 sensors flashed out of the PCM and sell the car to someone in another state that doesn't have smog testing say like Michigan

Says the guy who lives in Michigan;)
