What to do with S4 that needs new catalytic converters?
I have a 2001 S4 (manual) with around 120K miles on it. I'm ready to move on to my next vehicle, but check engine light recently came on and the dealer told me that the vehicle has one bad cat. and the other is "borderline" and quoted $4K to replace them . It's due for smog test in Sept.
The blue book value of this car is around $5700. I'm not sure if I'd be better off replacing the cats and then selling (for net return of $1700) or just selling the car "as is" to someone who can perhaps replace the cats more cheaply. If the latter, could I possibly get more than $1700? The car is in good shape otherwise.
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks,
Rand (California)
