Default Camshaft adjuster and P0014 code

This is a D3. Error code 000020 - Bank 1: Camshaft B (Exhaust)
P0014 - 004 - Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advance)

I don't know how these camshaft position adjusters work but I do see they are at the back of the engine and according to the manual, the engine has to come out to replace them.
Anyone know whether it's possible without engine removal?
Or, are there any other potential reasons for this code being thrown? You know, like simple ones, like camshaft position sensor gone to sleep!!

I found the solution to the P0014 Camshaft Retard setpoint not reached and it didn't involve replacing the camshaft adjuster. Here's the story:
The camshaft adjuster is activated by oil flow which is controlled by the Camshafter adjuster solenoid (Camshaft Control Valve Solenoid) O6E109257J on the S8 but sometimes the J can be a P.)
I didn't suspect the solenoid because the seller had the shop change it only 5 weeks previous. When I removed it, it was indeed a more recent valve but strangely enough it didn't look new. The markings were worn off the body and there were scratches on it. I ran 12v across the terminals and the inner control shaft didn't move at all. All I got was a spark as I connected.
I ordered a $33 one (a top quality one from China rather than the $133 VW-Audi one and tested it before I put it in. This time the shaft moved. I was surprised cuz it didn't move that much. Anyway, I buttoned everything back up, cleared the code and voila! The code hasn't come back. Also the car runs more smoothly.
One annoying thing about replacing these: They are held in by a tiny Torx 25 bolt. The bolt is recessed down 3 or 4" in a very narrow hole. This is done by Audi so that you will curse and swear because even a 1/4" driven Torx bit won't fit down there. You have to use a Torx screwdriver. But not just any screwdriver because the shaft must be long enough to avoid all the obstructions. Silly design for the sake of adding 5mm space. But I say that a hundred times while working on these cars. Don't get me started about pulling the air filter's on and off on the S8. What a inane stupid design!
