Default Is it worth it??

I recently scored what I thought was a steal and could make for a good project. I bought 4 - 17x7.5 wheels on craigslist for $100.

I just had the tires removed and aside from the finish peeling off (the reason the seller was selling them) I found a crack.

It is only the one wheel. As a rudimentary test I rolled the wheels on the floor and all rolled straight (albeit for the wheel weights). I assume I can have the wheel repaired....no? I figured someone who can weld aluminium can mend the crack and I'll be all set.

My buddy, whose opinion I have learned to trust says it's not worth it. His advice is fix them get them re-painted (powder coated) and try and sell them.

I really wish to keep them if it is possible. Suggestions?? In-sight??

TIA

I had a wheel with the same issue. WheelsAmerica in Philly will fix it for $129. Flat rate with powder coating.

I appreciate the response and link. My biggest question though is integrity issues. I assume it's a solid fix. I routinely travel with my 1-year old daughter and will not compromise safety. Sorry if I sound too **** about this, just looking for re-assurance.

Welding aluminum is a really specialized skill. Assuming the welder is experienced and knows his craft the weld spot should be just as strong, if not stronger than the rest of the wheel. Mainly depends on the quality of the filler wire.

***note I am neither a wheel or welding expert***

After scrubbing all the wheels as clean as I could get them....I have more issues than originally thought. There are hairline cracks on most of the spokes on all the wheels. Looks like these are going to be scrapped to see what kind of return I can get.

Lesson learned from purchasing wheels on craigslist I guess. That and if you have a buddy pick them up.....make sure they look them over thoroughly before buying.
