Default Problem with Freeplay upon take up of drive

Got a prob and before I take it to a garage I want to see if this is a common fault and if there is a easy fix.

When I lift the clutch to take up drive I notice that there is a bit of a know, as though a drive shaft is turning slightly before it turns a whee or it could even be the engine moving on it's mounts.

when I drive, in 3rd for instance, and I let my foot off the acellerator then the gear stick moves forward as the slack in the drive is released. Or it could be the engine moving forward on its mount if it's loose. It could also be general wear.

It's an A6 Quattro estate 2.5 TDi, 2003 model. Drives beautifully apart from this slack/movement in the drive chaine somewhere.

Any ideas for experience of this fault would be greatly appreciated
