Default Rear brake pad change - HELP!

This is the first brake pad change on my TT and I have done pad changes for many cars, but this one is really starting to **** me off. Other than an act of GOD I finally got the rear caliper off the right rear (Normally you should be able to wedge a flat head screw driver enough to compress the brake cyl, but I had to use brute force a block of wood and a hammer. Now my problem, I can't for the life of me compress the cyl to make room for the new pads, I even took the damn thing off and put it in a vice, No go.. I must either have a shot Caliper or I am missing something completely.. Can any one shed some light on this dilemma? Am I in for the same problems in the front?

Thanks

You can rent the tool from AutoZone. It compresses and rotates the cylinder at the same time..
