Here is the deal. I just pulled one of my front shocks, as i am replacing with a stasis kit, and when i try to get the nut off the top shock mount.

I am using an impact gun and all that happens is the shock rod , the nut is attached to, just spins. I tried a crescent wrench, a pipe wrench and nothing. Wasted all that time and had to put it back together.

Can anybody tell me how to get this nut off??????

 

sometimes you need to use a pair of vise grips to hold the shaft

 

Tried vice grips too. Maybe they were not big enough, but the shock shaft is so smooth that it still spins.

I used needle nose for mine and had my buddy hold one while i spun the other.

 

Needle nose pliers? So what did you have him hold on to?

 

I used a wrench while he held the pliers. had the bottom of the shock in a too a bit of tugging but it broke free. had the bottom of the shock in a vise to hold steady and twisted from bottom while unscrewing from top. if that makes any sense to you.

 

Hopefully I will have time to yank the shock out this weekend, but I didn't see the top piece you have pointed out. Thank you and i will take a look. also the bottom of the shock does not keep the internal from spinning on mine. If I don't find it I have heavy duty vice grips.
I am not sure why audi designed the suspension this way, but thank god replacing shocks is a one time thing.

 

yea the rear shocks are probably the most straightforward swap in our cars.
