ok so I got it working. What i did wrong was I didn't check what com port it was using, just tested all four in the options screen of vagcom and when i got a find on com 3 i assumed it was fine.

Went to device manager, com ports, usb and right clicked, properties. Then advanced and changed to com 2 - worked fine.

2 codes found for those interested, P0420 and P1570. I think the first has been with the car for a long time, the cat has been replaced so i think its just a tolerance issue or something, ill research it a bit more. The P1570 is something to do with the immobiliser right? Well i think i know when that happened (immobiliser chip fell out of my car a few months ago). Anyway im going to try crack the 409.1 to allow me clear these codes and see what happens.
