Default CA license plate laws

Anyone know the law in regard to putting German style plates on the front of a vehicle in CA - even if it mimics your actual registered plate number?

by law, you must have a front california license plate. however, i've been running a front euro plate with matching california plate on back now for 6 years (on 3 different cars). the trick seems to be if you also run a euro plate under the rear california plate, somehow it looks legitimate. i've never been hassled about it but then again, i drive like a total granny.

the only place you need to watch it is when parking on public streets, as meter maids might take offense and write you a fix it ticket. also a big place they bust no front plates is in public parking structures like the ones at LAX.

heck when my cars are new with the temporary tags on the windshield, i would run with ONLY the front and rear euro plates. i've driven past a ton of law enforcement and never got a second look.

Funny you mention that - when I was stationed in Germany I brought back my US Government issued plates and ran with them for nearly a year. Even my insurance didn't question them because they were good up til then. But they didn't have dated tags and I got 1 ticket from a CHP without even a question. By the way you are suppose to surrender them when you ship your car back and are illegal to run with them stateside.

But the reason I ask now is that CA has become ultra **** on those issues - though they keep trying to give illegals licenses - go figure!

I may run with the front Euro plates - it is a cool look indeed - gonna wait for my personal plates to show first then roll with them awhile

From what I've read it's set for the 10th of Dec - looking forward to seeing how the bigger brothers to my TT live life in the fast lane (sans CHP)
