Default CA Smog for out-of-state vehicle

OK folks, my search for an A6 has been painful. I've really been **** about the car I want. And, I've finally found one that I like. Unfortunately, it's in VA. I am ready to buy it, but, want to know if I'm going to have trouble registering it in CA. I've been doing research, but, I am still a little concerned. It's an '02 2.7T with ~60k on the clock. According to the dealer it's emission control is 50 state legal. The car is bone stock. Has anyone moved to CA and had a problem registering a car like this?

Just bought my '04 S4 from New York. Had no problems at all registering it. I had it smogged, and it passed easily. The only flak I got when registering was from the DMV's "inspection" guy - he laughed at the fact that I bought what he called a "wagon."

Go to the CA DMV website and look under vehicle registration for out of state vehicles. There's a checklist there to make your life easier.

thanks SoCalS4Avant. Yeah. I've been there. Believe me. Studied it hard. Just wasn't sure about the 50-state legal emissions thing. Does anyone know if all Audi's are manufactured that way after a certain year?

No problem. My vehicle says 50 state - and also says that it meets CA standards. Do they, by chance have the original sticker? While I believe all Audi's meet 50 state, not all say they meet CA. It's weird!

Something to note, is that when the DMV does your inspection, there are check boxes for meeting certain requirements, i.e. 50 state, 50 state and CA, CA only, etc. You may want to check with the person/dealer you're buying from and have them look under the hood to see if the emissions sticker says 50 State AND CA.

When I asked him about it, he said it was 50 State/CA legal. So, I *should* be good to go.

That's great news cbock. Didn't figure there'd be problems - but I know what it feels like to worry. How'd your DMV inspection go?

Dude, relax, you won't have a problem getting the car smog'd in CA if it is stock and that age. No problem at all.

Cheers!
