I have a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro w/factory sports suspension. The car's 10yrs old, but I'm looking to economically upgrade to get a tighter ride and better handling to increase the fun factor, as I'd like to drive the car as long as possible.

I'm thinking of 17" or 18" rims - something like Sport Edition F7 or MSW Type 14's (I like the simple 5-spoke look). For tires, either Ventus V12 evos or Ecsta LE sports (since both were rated highly and both have rebates now).

What do you think of 17" vs 18" and what do you think of my choices?

Will I need to go for aftermarket suspension as well and lower the car further to get a good look and ride, or will the wheels/tires alone take me 70-80% of the way there?

Personally I like the 18's on your A4.

In my experience the Hankook is the more versatile tire between the two. They have similar grip and handling characteristics but the V12 deals with the bumps and grooves in the road more effectively.

With a wheel and tire package you'll find a big improvement so I would definitely do that first before lowering and see how you like it.
