Tell the world a little bit about your vehicle
When purchased it in 1994 it was just a plain white 5000S. In the ensuing years it has turned into "Johnny Cash's '59 Cadillac".
I have been around VW's all my life, my father worked at dealers before starting his own shop in 1970. Through my life I must have owned more than 30 air cooled VW's, until I purchased my first Audi 5000, a 1984, in 1989 and began wondering why the hell I spent all those years driving outdated technology! This is my third driving 5000, I have purchased others for parts, both for use by myself or for selling off parts. It also helps that I spent a lot of time working in foreign repair shops and selling foreign parts as a counterman in independent repair/parts businesses. When I finally came home to Oregon in 1992, I started working in my Fathers shop, and spent 10 years there until his passing.
I would like to point out that the majority of the work done on this car has been done by myself. It is parked in a car port where the work has been done. I have only used hand tools, with an occasional power tool such as a drill, dremel, and other normal around the house tools.
I am quite proud of the fact that I have been able to build things like the the tranny cooler, power steering fluid cooler mounts and have the lines made locally. Most of these are stainless steel with AN fittings. I find myself always thinking of other things that I can/want/need to do. I was a mechanical draftsman so I have the wherewith-all to make detail drawings, and have a local machine shop that will try to make these things for me. That at times is a trial and error adventure but feels great when it all comes together.
The majority of the replacement hard parts have come from local "automotive recycling centers" and for the most part are "previously used items". By that I mean, for example, that I got a set of calipers, cleaned, disassembled, and using new seal kits were then reassembled. I am the sort of person that if I can make it I will do that rather than purchase a new item, since I live on a fixed income, the money I can spend on parts is somewhat limited.
I cruise these yards and keep my eyes open to see what items other manufacturers have on their cars and see if I can adapt them to my car. I prefer to use factory Audi/VW parts, and have found that a lot of parts from newer than my car will, or can be made, to fit.
Engine/Drivetrain Modifications:
Factory rebuilt 2.3 NF. Got it free with 300 miles on it.
Match ported the intake and exhaust. Exhaust manifold and down pipe from a '86 4000 Quattro, the rest of the exhaust is 2.5 inch flowing thru two Magnaflow mufflers.
272 cam and light-weight lifters.
All engine sheet metal is powder coated white.
Finally found a aluminum finned oil pan from a 1990 non-turbo 20 valve. Spent about 30 hours polishing the inside and the outside. Deburring, removing cast flashing and smoothing every surface.
Turbo electric water pump hooked into fan after-run circuit.
Transmission has been gone thru with TLC. I removed some weight from the governor throws until it shifts under full throttle at 6100 RPM, the closest I dare get to red line.
Final drive case was debured, painted several coats of black, and any removable items were painted red. The tranny case was also debured, casting flashes were removed, all sharp edges were removed and the entire case was polished to look like chrome. Yes I have way too much time on my hands.
Original tranny cooler removed and replaced with thermostat and external cooler mounted in right front wheel well. I used a Volvo 240 transmission cooler because it was easy to find A/N fittings to work with steel braided cooler lines.
Power steering fluid cooler. Mounted a duplicate cooler in left front wheel well.
I modified the transmission pan to hold an extra quart of tranny fluid.
I was fortunate to find a guy who had a worn out 1991 20 valve turbo quattro that he wanted torn down. He wanted only some important parts and if I were to do this for him I could have what I wanted that he did not need/want. From this car I got some items that I have been searching for over the last 10-15 years. I got the entire front end body items needed to install the auxiliary radiator and accompanying parts. Radiator, auxiliary radiator, hoses, front support panel that holds the headlamps and grill, and the cross member that the auxiliary radiator mounts to, bumper, and even the brake cooling ducts. As well as all those little pieces that are so difficult to find separately.
Suspension Modifications:
Front brakes are from a 1988 5000 Quattro, G60 calipers with ATE PremiumOne Slotted rotors, and PBR ceramic pads.
Front stabilizer bar from a 1990 V8.
Rear rotors and caliper brackets are also from a 1990 V8. For this to work the rear pads have to be machined down to a total thickness of 12mm each.
All components are powder coated black.
DOT approved steel braided brake hoses, lengths made to order.
Lowering springs in the front and rear, now it sits like it should.
I replaced the factory stamped steel pedal bracket with an alloy one from a '88 TQ. This really tightened up the feel of the brake pedal.
The booster and master cylinder are from a 1990 V8.
I installed the 'cross member" from a 5000TQ, easy install, clean threads on studs and install. Just a little body stiffening.
In the rear axle housing I installed the "stress bar" from a 5000 Turbo, which later became standard equipment on the 100's. Tightened up the rear a lot.
Wheels/Tires Modifications:
16 inch factory FAT fives with 205-50-16 Yokohama all season sport radials.
Interior/Exterior Modifications:
Hood is from a 1988 5000 Turbo Quattro, what I like to call the "flat" hood as opposed to the "Honda" hood that came with the car. White for $30.00
Door shells have been swapped for 1989 100 doors. Found four white ones for $75.00, This is an easy swap as the frames bolt right on to the newer shells.
Front and rear seats are from, again, a 1990 V8. They are heated, I installed the wiring harness and switches, so that I can enjoy the warm butt on cold wet Oregon mornings.
I changed the climate control system to the later '86 and up Digital Climate control, bought a wrecked '87 as a donor car for this. A much nicer set-up than the early version. Did a complete change over to 134a with hoses, seals, compressor, etc.
Head lamps are E-code with true HID, meaning that they are HID on both high and low beams.
I have replace all exterior bulbs with LED's and a LED compatible flasher
Quattro tail light assembly, you know amber and red across the entire rear.
No I don't want clear lenses anywhere on my car. I had to modify my E-codes to accept the original amber corner lights.
Installed the side marker lights in the front fenders from that 1991 20 valve. I wired them to be on with the parking lights and blink with the turn signals.
Found a full set of interior door panels from a 1987 TQ, black, in excellent condition. Modified the rear panels to accept a 5 inch mid and moved the tweeter up towards the top of the door panel. The front door panels have the factory speakers left in place, just haven't got around to hooking them up yet. Do I really need 16 speakers?
Yes I have a stereo in my car but I won't say what, but you can infer from the above that it's not stock, haha.
Keyless entry and remote start.
Future Modifications:
Currently working on some things.
Upper strut bar and upper adjustable camber plates.
I also found a Zender rear spoiler in a yard that I got for a literal steal. Read more ยป
