Wheel Bearing Engineering Analysis

Description:
At the time I was working at Daimler-Benz, and that's the best credential I can bring to the table. This is the notorious-for-failure B5 wheel bearing (passenger rear). What happens is some sort of breach in the outer bearing seals; dust and road debris get in and become an aggregate for the existing grease, turning it into a corrosive, abrasive mess that eats away at the individual ball bearings. Metal shavings come off of these and join the aggregate, quickening the process. Loss of grease causes hot spots, even FURTHER damaging the bearings. Luckily, it's a two-piece bearing, so you can safely drive for a while on it. In this example, the outer bearing was compromised, which makes sense as it's further exposed to the road.
