I have a 99 1.8T with the Symphony sound system and a 6 disc changer in the trunk. I keep getting the ERR1 message for every CD, and it won't even read a cleaning CD long enough.
Does anyone know what to do?
Also, another site suggested I unplug it from the "HU" and then reset the radio with the code, I have the code but what do they mean when they say unplug it from the HU?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Welcome to the forum! Hope you find it entertaining and informative here. As for your question, "HU refers to the Head Unit. To reset the head unit, you'll need to disconnect it from power. If you can get the deck ou of the dash, just unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in. That's when you'll need the code. HTH

Yeah, it's either that or most likely need to be replaced.
Your call on a OEM replacement or aftermarket upgrade. Good luck.

CD1 ERR1 = CD dirty or improperly installed
CD1 ERR2 = CD has scratches
Try a CD Cleaner, try some compressed air in the changer, if that doesnt work your changer has probably gone south.

The compressed air worked for about a day, and now its out. So I'm out to buy a new changer tomorrow! Thanks for all the help guys!
hi gladgaljen,
could you let me know if you managed to get hold of another changer? i am unable to find them and all car audio repair centres dont seem to want to go near the audi changer.. i am going to buy some compressed air tomorrow as i think i have tried everything else. i had exactly the same problems as your car did.

i bought some compressed air and tried to move any debris i could see in the changer, but still no fix. i have booked it in with my local audi dealership for them to have a look but i have a feeling its going to be very expensive through them..
