Default my engine sounds like an old ford

i have a 1991 audi coupe which i have nearly restored to full glory, after changing the whole fuel managment system and fuel injectors i thought the engine would run kinda sweet as it was sounding like and old dog i have now noticed that when i took the thing for its first drive the acceleration was not quite what it should be for a 2.0e,when i tried to boot for more acceleration the crank bearings sounded a bit strained like the old fords used to,could this be caused by a naff timing chain as i really dont want to start meesing with the crank bearings unless i really have to and how do i sort out the chain, the timing and idle are minutely out also, which makes me think the problem could be the timing chain, any help would be much appreciated as i want to get my baby finished.

I am pretty sure that you car has a timing belt and not a chain. The noise could be the result of bad hydraulic lifters or tensioner pulley if your car has one.
