Default S4 B5 Turbo help needed

My turbos are shot and am having them replaced. They quoted me over a thousand apeice. I have read in several places that my engine has K03 turbos. I noticed on ebay there are alot of K03's, but none say they are for my 2.7T, just the 1.8T. Are these turbos a direct bolt on replacement? Also I was wondering if they are rebuildable. If so does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks, your help is much apreciated!!

Welcome to the forums!

Yes k03's are the OEM pieces and are prone to failure, usually people go new rather than rebuild. If i were you i would get a pair of K04 turbos, the inital cost for them will be higher, but they are infinitly more relyable than the k03's.

ECS sells the basic kit. It is $2850 for the 2 turbos, inlet pipes, and all the gaskets. Labor would be the same. I would recommend having the mechanic check out the oil feed and drain lines to your turbos (if you dont replace the lines) too make sure there is no blockage. You dont want to replace another set of turbos 50 miles later.

thanks for the quick response! one more quick question, are the K04's a direct replacement or does there need to be modifications? and also are the K03's direct bolt on? The guys at the shop said I have alot of oil in the intercoolers, which is a sighn of bad turbos, do they need to be replaced as well? Thanks again

There is no modification needed for k04's other than the kit i just linked you to. You might need to buy a chip and FPR specifically for the k04's but i think thats only if you want to increase power. Is that somehting youre interested in? alot of oil in your intercoolers dosnt sound like its a good thing but maybe youc an somehow clean the oil out? Ask you mechanic what he thinks. Are there any mods done to your car?

Edit: oops i gues si forgot the link! Sorry here it is. Its the ECS complete K04 kit. Not JUST the turbos. You need the kit to make it bolt on.

The guy before me actully took it to ECS while they serviced cars. as far as the engine goes, all he had done was a APR chip. Iam assuming that the K04's will reqiuire a ECU re-flashing, correct me if Iam wrong.

ko3's are unrelyable. some say that they are too small for the 2.7t engine we have. ko4's, however, are just right. you will need inlets and proper harware for the ko4's. hpaddict linked u a great site for the necessary equipment. with the new set-up you can run stock software but yr car will run lean, so to fix this you will need a stage 3- software some someone like GIAC or a new fpr and mbc. or even better go stage 3, but all that would be around 8-10K. labor for new ko4's is around 1400-2000 i'd say. I got quote on 1250! gl w/ everything

All K03's and K04's are made by the same company (Borg Warner), but NOT all K03s and K04s are the same. For example, the K04s that you see posted about in the A4 forums for the 1.8Ts aren't the same K04s that we talk about here.

It's STRONGLY recommended to upgrade to K04s when your K03s die on our B5s. There are many reasons for this, the three primary ones being a) You won't be saving a TON of money by going with K03s vs. vastly superior K04s b)Once you have K04s, your upgrade path is widened greatly, and basically, the sky becomes the limit, whereas with K03s, there's only so much you can do before you run them dangerously out of their efficiency range and they basically implode on you c) *MOST IMPORTANT* K04s actually last long. If you replace your K03s with another set of K03s, you're setting yourself up for unavoidable failure again in the future.

You can just get the K04s + hardware, and it'll bolt right on with no other modifications. It probably won't run ideally on the bone stock ECU tuning, so you should get in touch with some of the big chip tuners (GIAC, APR, VAST) for a K04 file that will retain stock-like driveability (with more power, ofcourse )

There's an even cheaper kit than the ECS one, from a very reputable source!

Good luck!
