Goodbye to my 2003 2.7T MT6
After 11 years, I made the hard choice to sell the nicest, safest, coolest vehicle I have owned. I bought her in 2005 with 37k miles and drove her from Michigan to Maine, to Florida, to Texas, to Minnesota, letting her go with 240k. I had three kids in AAA and college hockey, and many of those miles were in horrible winter conditions. The A6 was rock solid in blizzards, white out, and ice. People complain about reliability. I probably over maintained her, but she never failed to start even with a bad fuel pump near the end. That included Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ontario mornings <10 below zero.
She was chipped around 75k and was still pulling strong at the end. Yes, the turbos leaked oil for the last 60k, but they spooled hard after 3k. She started on the first key turn, and while the synchros seemed to be getting a little worn, careful shifting was always rewarded wth a smooth snick into gear.
Why did I let her go? Well, I was worried about those turbos failing and had a little scare with a fuel pump failure 130 miles from home -- but she eventually got me within 30 miles before starving for fuel. I could live with the temp gauges insisting on C instead of F, but the doors failing to latch properly in cold weather was the final issue. Just about everything worked other than the headlight washers and a squealy heater fan. Damn, she was a sweet ride. Solid, kinda fast, but with the upside of pushing 140-150 mph (did it after chipping, not recently).
Sadly I only got $350 for her but I pulled back all five rims with four almost-new tires. No curb rash.
I did pick up a 2011 A4 2.0T MT6 in late 2014 and she has been a good ride. Not as solid or pretty as the silver ghost, but she gets 28-31 mpg even at 70-75. The ghost barely pushed 23-25. But, so much more solid.
Anyway, A6 owners, see you over in the A4 threads.
