Torque Specs help, please
Found out that my A6 Quattro Wagon is a pre-Mid-Year swap model, meaning I got the earlier engine model that isn't listed on the books! I purchased a Bentley Service Manual for 1998-2004 A6's, but my engine isn't covered (AFC). Really don't want to spend another $100 on a manual just for the torque specs of this engine. Can anyone help? I'm trying to replace a blown head gasket, need the torque specs for all the associated pieces to put back together. Thank you in advance for any help

Yes, that's what I was told by an Audi dealership partsman. It would explain why this BP SvcManual isn't showing my engine and why I don't see the engine code on the many lists on the net. None are showing the 'AFC' code for 1998. So, right now I'm not knowing the correct torque spec's to put this engine back together. And spending another $100+ for a new manual or DVD is just depressing to think about.

Thanks NHUSA, for commenting, not sure how I'm making excuses when I find Bentley showing a manual for Audi A6 1998-2004, covering A6,S6, allroad quattro and RS6, why would I think it doesn't cover the 1998 car? The CD you mentioned for the A6 is showing to be the same as the manual I purchased. The car doesn't state it's an Avant, anywhere, so why would I think to purchase an Avant manual? Maybe I'll be checking the A4's manual since now I know the engine was part of their production too. I would hope being an new Audi owner isn't going to be.....well, just confusing. Thanks anyway.

Audi changed all but the Avant to the new body style in 1998.
The Avant change happened in 1999.
If you go to the Bentley web site, click on the repair manual selector and choose 1998 Avant it leads you to the earlier manual not the later.
Although I had a 1998 Avant, I called it a 1997 so folks would not give me the wrong parts and I checked them with my copy of ELSA when possible.
I now have ELSA, the Bentley repair DVD, a cam bar, crank locking pin, operators manual, and spare Symphony Radio with codes for a kaput 1998 Audi Avant. OH Joy!

Intake Manifold Bolts - 15 ft Lb
Valve Cover Bolts - 7 ft Lb
Camshaft Pos Sensor Bolts - 7 ft lb
Cylinder head Bolts - (already posted for you the illustration for tightening sequence)
1st stage- 44 ft lb
2nd stage - additional 1/2-turn (180 °). For final 1/2-turn, two 1/4-turns (90 ° ) are also permissible.
I'm pretty sure those are all the torques you need if you don't have the heads apart (camshafts out).

Thank you sirs! Yes, I'm finding out if I say it's a 1997, the correct engine code comes up. And thanks for posting the torque specs, those are what I'm needing now to reassemble. I'll post more pics when it's running again.
