Hey, im looking for some help and thought this was a good place to start. Here is my situation:
I just bought my first car, $1000 for a 87 5000CD turbo, no rust, new tires, everything in working condition except one back window and the stereo. So my first plan was to upgrade the stereo. Went to CT and picked up a cd deck with aux input. Took an hour or so just to figure out how to wire it properly and in the end iwas only able toget sound to my front 2 speakers. If anyone has a wiring diagram for this car id really appreciate some q&a time. Thats not my priority right now, unfortunatly.
Since the cold weather has hit my car has had problems starting.Thecarusually starts finethe first time if its been sitting for over 4 hours. Once startedit idlesaround 500-900rpm and its a bit choppy. The problem starts when ive driven the car for10 mins, turn it off, and try and start it again. It usually takes 3-8 tries with me feathering the gas pedal and sometimes it wont start at all.
Ive tried gas line antifreeze, taking off the gas cap to eliminate the possiblity of vapour lock, holding down the gas pedal prior totrying to start the car. Thefluids in the car are all topped off andthe car doesnt find any problems when running its diagnostics checkprior to starting.
If anyone has any ideas regarding this situation that would be very helpful.
thanks
kyle

RE: New Owner of 1987 5000 CD Turbo with starting problem
This is a Diesel? If it is start by changing the fuel filter, next with your VOM check the glow plugs by disconecting the buss bar to the plugs check to see that you have about 1.8 ohms between the GP terminal and ground. If you have a lot less than apx. 1.8 ohms or more than 1.8 replace the glow plug with the same kind. Make sure you have the correct GP relay for the car and plugs.
Make sure the GP fuse is good and the relay is good.

RE: New Owner of 1987 5000 CD Turbo with starting problem
It runs off of gasoline, but thanks for taking the time to reply CTD.
In the last few days ive been tinkering around and heres what ive done.
filled it with premium gas
checked the battery - 475 cranking amps
cleaned the contacts on the distributor
tightened all gear clamps
checked the fuses
checked the fuel pump - works fine
After all of this the car still has problems starting. Tomorrowim going to change the oil and check the spark plugs. When the car doesnt start it sounds like its not getting fuel. Is there a possibilty that the engine is not firing in the right sequence, if so what would i check? timing belt? could the computer be off or not working properly? could any relay switch cause a problem like this?

RE: New Owner of 1987 5000 CD Turbo with starting problem
yesterday i started to trace the fuel system and found out that theres gas getting to the primary inline filter but after the filter it goes into a part that times the injection of fuel into the cylinders. At this point the gas was not flowing correctly or at all. Im assuming that theres a faulty connection or switch, but would likeanother opinion bc ive never encountered this before.

Sounds like the same problem I am having with my 86 CS turbo Wagon, it will run find if it has been setting for a while, yet if you drive it for any time it will not restart for a while. I have replaced the fuel pump, and Have worked on the distributor every time I move the distribuor It will start...I don't know Any one have any ideas?????

Ya im having this issue with my 88 5000 csTQ also...hey TurboRhatt, when you say, "every time I move the distribuor It will start," do you mean you figured out a way to get it to start after a period of driving/shut off? If all i gotta dois drop an elbow on my distributor to get her runnin then so be it.I hate lookin like a horse's a#@ after leaving a place and having to wait in my car for 1/2 hr before i can leave (gas stations make me nervous). I just want to fix this asap

If any of you are still having issues with starting i thought it would be responsible i guess to post up that i added a full tank of 89 octane with 1 bottle of lucas octane boost and a whole bottle of Red line fuel injector cleaner today. I drove somewhere and got to full operating temp and shutdown. 10 minutes later my hot start problem was history and my cold starts are completely cured. PEOPLE, use red line cuz its 7 bucks at import shops and could completely cure your fuel delivery issues. if it doesnt do the trick then it couldnt hurt one bit. the stuff is the ****...

YOu know I did have this same type of problem, If you have spark, and every thing esle is good check the fuel pump, mine did this you could hear the pump kick in at first but it would not stay running, I foiund that I replaced the pump and it fixed it for about a year then it started to do it again, so I changed it out again, what I found is the pump is cooled and lubticated by the fuel in the tank if you run it low the pump heats up and sooner or later will only work every once in a while... So replace the pump make sure you pump relay is good also (Before you replace the pump because there is allot of electricity running theought this relay as well and it could be part of your problem also..TR
