You may be out of luck. He didn't lose the valet key, the "master key". The one you give to the valet to park your car.
My 90 100 only has the valet key, but my trunk is in the unlock position, and the glove box. I CAN'T lock either of those, though it will lock/unlock the door and operate the ignition.
My solution, that I never followed up on, would have been to remove the trunk lock and take it to a locksmith to have it rekeyed to fit my key. (My car was too old for Audi to have my key code on file. Maybe yours IS on file?)
Yours IS newer, doubt that they have changed the system, valet key will still only unlock, or lock, the door and ignition. Autolock will only unlock a mechanically unlocked trunk. If it has been keylocked, it won't do it.
That, actually, does not make any sense, even to me. Mine is unlocked by key, and will NOT lock by key in the doorlock. Unless, again, the owner's key, and not the valet key is required to lock/unlock the trunk.
Last option, I had it on an 80 5000, took my kid to college, trunk full of her stuff, trunk wouldn't open. Went to a gas station, pulled up the back carpet, found a crack in the vaccuum line, blew air into it and it opened. Splice made it good, after that.
Cheers,
George
