Have 1988 90 Qaut, daughter had car break down bout 100 miles from the house-I was going to go get it- have dolly from other uses- dealer told her no way must be trailer all wheels off grd. It is a 5 spd. Since it never has broken til now, I have never checked on towing it one way or the other-does anyone know the truth? Asked daughter to look in owner's manuel but thats not happening. I was under the impression that being a stick it would be ok-please tell me what you know.

"Basically everyvehicle with standard all-wheel drive need to be off the ground when it's beingtowed. This is also known as flat-bedding.
Otherwise, "you could get damage to the transmission or differential," he said.
Matthews explained because all four wheels get power and are therefore "tied together," there's really no way to put any of the wheels to the ground and not have the transmission or transaxle "burn up."
The reason? Simply, as any of the drive wheels moves while the vehicle is improperly towed, mechanicals in the transmission and sometimes in the differential move, too. Since the engine isn't operating, there are no fluids flowing to keep the parts lubricated."

you can pull the car, like all wheels on the ground, or you can flat bad. But never leave 2 wheels on the ground and others off, couse the torsen will blow.
u can do that for less that 20 miles.
if u have a strong car, then u can just pull the car home.

Towing vehicles with front-wheel drive and automatic gearbox

When towing a vehicle with front-wheel drive and automatic gearbox the following points must also be noted:

t
Selector lever must be in position ā€œNā€.

t
Do not tow vehicle at a speed of more than 50 km/h.

t
The maximum towing distance is 50 kilometres.

t
If towing over greater distances, the vehicle must be lifted at the front.

Reason: When the engine is not turning the gearbox oil pump will not work - the gearbox will therefore not be adequately lubricated for higher speeds or longer distances.

t
When using a breakdown vehicle, the vehicle can only be towed with the front wheels raised.

Reason: If vehicle is towed when raised at rear, the drive shafts will turn backwards. As a result, the planetary gears in the automatic gearbox will then turn at such high speeds that the gearbox will be severely damaged in a short time.

Towing vehicles with four-wheel drive and manual gearbox

When towing a vehicle with four-wheel drive and manual gearbox the following points must also be noted:

When using a breakdown vehicle, the vehicle being towed can be suspended (either at front or rear).

t
Do not tow vehicle at a speed of more than 50 km/h.

t
The maximum towing distance is 50 kilometres.
Note[/align]

If it is not possible to tow the vehicle normally, it must be transported by a special transporter or trailer. This also applies to distances greater than 50 kilometres.
