2005 Allroad 4.2 V8 Timing Chain replacement - comments or thoughts?
Quote: These never need replacing according to my Audi Service Tech. If you have to replace them you will be replacing the entire engine.
I wish this quote was true...or maybe someone can correct my Audi repair guy @ our closest dealer.

My 2005 AR has the 4.2L V8 and just recently the check engine light came on. I checked it with my scanner and came up with a P0021 code.

P0021 Camshaft Position Actuator A - Bank 2 Timing Over-Advanced

I took it to the dealer and they said the timing chains (chains?), guides and tensioners need to be changed. This is a huge bill ($7,250) and I'm not sure what to do.

Anyone have input on the claim above saying they "never" (you know what they say...) need replacing and/or about the price?

I am going to hit a couple non-dealer shops here (very limited on options in Montana) to get second/third opinions on the situation, but I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

The car has 151,000 miles on it, the interior and exterior are in great shape.
