Default Blown turbo, need some tech resources.

Hey All,

So, I lost a turbo on my '01 Allroad, and am needing some help gathering resources on this car. I know the engine needs to be removed, and I have plenty of experience working with cars, but this is a new engine for me and I'm not quite sure where all the goodies are on it. Does anyone have a good tech manual or tech guide for removing the turbos that they'd be willing to share? Thanks in advance for the help.

By the way, it sounds almost exactly like this one:

i never heard of engine removal for a turbo install, search and decide stock new, rebuilt or aftermarket upgrade, get a factory service manual and do research on-line or go to a reputable independent you trust

Glad to see you read my original posting. I'm asking if anyone has a good tech manual, and on the 2.7's you have to pull the engine to swap the turbos out. I've already figured out what turbos and such I want to get, I just need access to a tech manual so I can find out what steps there are to taking everything apart.

So just so we're all clear, if someone has access to a tech manual for the 2.7T engine or instructions on how to take out the engine, it'd be appreciated.

you can get a 1 year alldata subscription from autozone for like $25 or something like that. or get a bently repair manual. but make sure you dont get the service manual, cuz thats useless. i think the repair manual only comes on cd now.

Default 2.7T engine out

There must be some decent DIY write ups for engine out.
I am looking for one, too.
Can someone post links, please?

I assume that 'drop engine, tranny, subframe' is recommended?
If so: clever way to support the 'drop' unit with car on the hoist?
Or do as much as possible, then lower hoist and put jacks under and make the remaining disconnects for the final 'drop'?

Not to many DIYers removing 2.7ts out there. It is a large undertaking.
Remove front bumper , remove lock carrier , start unbolting & disconecting **** , removed engine from the front of vehicle.
Very condensed version.

Part # REPA 290103-PLK, REPA 29104-PLK. So I did something so stupid that I had to share. My OEM turbos started leaking internally in September '13 and I looked around for replacement turbos. My local dealer suggested some rebuilt ones (one for 1200 and the other for just over 1k)Considering that the dealership recommended their rebuilt OEM turbos, I considered getting my original ones rebuilt, which was about $350 each. However, I have long dreamed of upgrading my 03 Allroad and my mechanic recommended swapping my turbos of KO4's. Well stupid me fell for the plan and I found some brand new K04's from Discount Body Parts. After several hours of research and discussion with their tech specialists, I found that I could buy a pair for only $600. Well of course I bought them and found out why so many knowledgeable people here on this forum say to DONT BUY CHEAP TURBOS. Those turbos failed in two weeks after an expensive swap that required new intake pipes and new down pipes (to fit an automatic). Under warranty, I got two more replacement turbos and found out just why the Discount Body Parts turbos suck. Due to the poor fit, the angle of the oil return line is too high. This causes the turbo to keep too much oil inside and not drain properly, which causes it to leak oil out of the back through the exhaust and also get too hot. Since then I have been fighting with Discount Body Parts to get my full refund ( they only refunded $292 of the $600 because their warehouse cant confirm that they received all their turbos back…after having them for over a month)

So I would not recommend ordering parts from them unless you want to risk the endless headache of Refund Hell and enjoy speaking to people that honestly do not understand your concerns (awful tech support) nor do they follow up with their promises a majority of the time.

Oh an I recently replaced my front right CV axle with Raxles….AWESOME ! I was able to do it pretty quickly by only removing the upper control arms and pulling down on the wheel housing to swap shafts (the other tutorials get you close, but the ALLROAD is a bit different.)

I saved your post as a poster child example for "do NOT buy ebay china crap turbos".
Only get OEM rebuild (or upgraded/hybrid) turbos from reputable sources (using OEM quality parts, cartridges, etc.) and KNOW what they are doing.

Even more so for the 2.7T, because labor (engine out!) is a killer (or PITA if DIY).

Get Frankenturbo or contact Turbo Concepts (turboconcepts@charter.net; (734) 954-9940) if you need your turbos fixed, or upgrade to larger turbo.
