A conversion kit story...
I feel like I'm losing my car in the next couple of days but not really. My allroad had been a great car for the first couple of years, 64,000 to 90,000 miles. Then two year's ago the air struts in front were leaking and ultimately replaced. Last year the compressor went and that was replaced in December. Finally the big one arrived.
It all started with an oil change by me, a non DIY guy. When change of oil was finished I put on the under carriage oil catch whatever it is called that hooks up. Of course mine was missing all the bolts and held together with a quick tie plastic thing. In putting the oil catch up it was snug and not fitting and I was tired and cold and just shoved it in and in doing so I severed a hose. It caused the allroad to ride at the highest position for a few days and then stop. I brought it to a garage, non-imports type, and he figured it was the compressor, so I go buy another one, just a year and a week after installing the last one. The car still didn't raise up. He had no clue. I brought it to an import car mechanic and he said there was an electrical problem because the ESP lights would light up when started and go off after no more than 2 seconds. But the mechanic needed to further diagnose the problem and the car needed to be dropped off a few days because of ice and snow but that couldn't be done until last week.
The allroad was diagnosed and the first thing the mechanic found was the air suspension control module was blown so I found a used one on ebay and it was installed on Monday. It turned on and the car raised and it worked for about 15 minutes before it turned off the mechanic said. He thought a bad relay so a new one was installed today but it didn't help. I was told the solenoid is sending air to the back and not to the front struts, then it stops altogether because front aren't working. The diagnostics stops at the solenoid, he can't get any readings from the sensors on the front struts and he is not sure what is needed. I can bring it to an audi dealership but the one problem is a. cost and b. wife and i are using a rental car because her car was just totaled. The mechanic said he wouldn't be surprised if the dealership ended up replacing the solenoid and everything else along the way. He recommended just getting the conversion kit.
I ordered a kit today from Strutmasters, next day service for less than $1200. Although I will miss the air suspension system, it will be nice to drive with shocks after three months of driving without them. And it still went pretty good in the snow, with no clearance. And the first mechanic who said it was a bad air compressor, it was not, it was the control module.
Last little note, one day driving I had this debate in my head that if God should feel like it He could make the suspension work but then I thought it's mechanical and not spirit so probably can't work with that and then at it's basic form we are all atoms/energy so maybe. Needless to say, the next day I started the car and it was the only day in the last three months the car raised and drove half the day in level 2. It wasn't until I got greedy and went for level 3 that the ESP lights went out and so did the air.
