I goof around with mine all the time. Possibly a mistake...
If I know I'm going to be on relatively smooth roads I'll drop down to 1. If I'm heading into construction or bumpy city roads, I'll go up to 3.
Level 2 would be 75% of my time though.

Most leaks are developed starting with car at level 1 or 2. Often it still can keep the pressure if raised to 3 or 4. If you look at design of that thing you can see that the bag has most sharp bent when it is in between 1 and 2. The rubbing contributes as well. I started having the problem with bad leak in both front bags 3 month ago. Found $10 15 min. solution that works as a charm so far : SLIME tire silant put into the bag through air connectors. I aware of potential danger of that stuff getting where it shouldn't, but I took the risk and looks like I succeeded: for 3 months the problem totally disapeared. Should I file for a patent?

One more thing. while that sux when bags leak, I noticed one positive thing when I had to ride quite a distance with car on its belly: fuel saving. That was the only time when my allroad 2.7T made 520k on the tank with some gas left when I filled up!

Did you mean 520km instead of 520k, so 323 miles?

I used to run it on 1 but every morning I woke up I found the tire touching the fender. Now that I leave it in 2 I haven't had any problems. I still plan to change the faulty bag when I get the money. Sometimes if I feel extra pimp I'll air down to 1 once I park. I agree it looks best at that position.
