Default Secondary air injection pump

My '02 Allroad is making a very bad noise for about a minute after a cold start - just like a jet engine. I believe it is the secondary air injection pump causing this. I talked to my mechanic and he suggested trying to get one online as the dealership will only sell complete pumps with various brackets, etc. and it can be pretty expensive. Anyone have any suggestions for where to find one online?

Very much appreciated.

ECS Tuning has a decent price. You can search for 078906601H and see what comes up.

If I were you, and air-pump wise, I pretty much am you, (mine's screaming like a banshee) I wouldn't replace it until the computer tells you it needs to be replaced (secondary air pump insufficient flow-I forget the exact error code). There are stories of them lasting a long, long time in screaming mimi mode. Mine's been like this since last summer.

I thought about trying to spray some kind of lube into the intake for the air pump, to try and shut it up, but it's hard to reach, and I'm lazy.

Are you sure it's not the auxiliary cooling fan? Not cheap, not expensive, not dire. Live with it until you get the code. Mine on the 6 has been going for a year and a half.

Hey people I have a 03 A6. The check engine light has been on. When I got it checked I was told it was SAIP. It doesn't make a sound like some of you are describing. However it is not start up on a cold start. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

It could be that it has actually failed or seized. They have a habit of blowing the 50A fuse in the box under the plenum chamber when they get too bad.

I bought my '02 with a knackered SAIP and it had blown the fuse. Got my local indie to replace it with a 2nd hand one that lasted about 12 months, it too blew the fuse. I noticed because i replaced it with a new one myself and the code kept coming back. Checked then replaced the fuse and voila, it's been fine since.

Sorry to dig this up, but i threw the code (can't remember what exactly the numbers were) about 2 months ago, that read secondary air injection pump, and i cleared it and it's stayed off. however, for about 3 months (which is how long i've had the car) the heater does make the screaming noise. i got quoted $285 today to get the pump in but that's no labor. should i replace this part since i already threw the code, or should i just not worry about it since the code hasn't come back yet..?

The fan is easy to rebuild. If it's screeching, it's almost certainly the bearings. They're a standard size sealed ball bearing unit that you can get at a bearing place. Or tool repair, or maybe a really good hardware store. Take out the old ones & take them with you when you go to get the new ones.

If you can live with the noise, you could ignore it or rebuild it. Bering in mind as i mentioned in the previous post, if it gets too bad and seizes it can blow the 50a fuse too.

$285 for a genuine new pump is a good price, and it's not too hard to fit yourself, probably take you about 1hr on an allroad, as it is relatively near the top of the engine.
