Default Windshield Replacement Question

Hello,

I have a 2004 Allroad and my front windshield needs to be replaced. I called a commercial windshield replacement center and they said I could choose between an insulated windshield and a non-insulated windshield.

The insulated windshield costs about $600 whereas the non-insulated windshield costs $300.

Do I need / should I purchase the insulated windshield? Does it make a difference?

Thanks!

I've had my windshield replaced a number of times over the years. I never knew there was an option!

Default Insulated vs non-insulated windshield

I'm needing a new windshield on the 4.2 Allroad I got out in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago -- it's full of teeny pits, looking like it came through a few years of sandstorms. I would imagine the insulated windshield would be a whole lot quieter as far as wind noise goes, as well as attenuating the sound emitted by loud trucks, vibrating sheet metal trunks from subwoofers in rice rockets with coffee-can exhausts, etc., etc.

I spoke with my brother, who does auto glass.

Your Audi didn't come with insulated and insurance would never pay for it. If you're doing it on your own dime you can go for it. He believes the theory is that insulated is indeed more quiet and he thinks cars with Bluetooth might tend to have the option.

No idea how much more quiet it would be, but I know I wouldn't pay for the option if it were me!

Default Thanks

Thank you, tbeaulieu! It does sound like some sort of gimmicky thing. I live in Colorado so I figure I'll have to replace a few more windshields before the car is done. I'll go with the cheap version.

Default Jimmywallet where did you go to get it replaced?

New member here and I just bought a 2003 Allroad. I'm in Denver.
The former owner had the glass replaced and it wasn't done correctly and so the plastic rain tray/cowl (that sits behind the wiper arms) leaks and allows water down the vent with the cabin filter and into the floor.

Did you have any leaking problems after you replaced the windshield?
If all went well, where did you go?

I know this thread is old, but any info would help

Thanks
Jeff
