'07 A3 2.0T 'buzzing noise'
Hi all,
I just picked up my new '07 A3 yesterday and I took it for a short drive outside the city to see the effect of Xenon lights. When I came home and turned off the engine, I heard this "silent" not loud, buzzing noise coming from the engine compartment. It stopped after 5-10 min. Can anyone tell me if this is normal???
thanks

Yep, fan runs if the engine needs cooling and the pump for the coolant keeps running until the turbo is cool. When you open the driver's door up in the morning you'll hear the fuel pump gear up so the car starts more easily. All normal.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Sounds like the turbo cooling down...
If you drive it hard its a good idea to drive it at low rpm for a bit or leave the car running when you park it for a few mins...to give the turbo a chance to cool down. you will likely still hear that buzzin but at least the turbo is able to dissipate some of the heat with the engine running. all the fluids (oil, coolant) are circulating and drawing out the heat. If you turn off your car after after drivin it hard without a "proper" cool down. The heat will build up and could effect the longevity of your turbo and its performance.
I drive my car hard (sometimes ;-) ) and always follow that rule after. I have had it on the track and after a few high speed laps that turbo is buzzin like no other. lifting the hood helps let the heat out too in situations like this.
My last car a 01 beetle 1.8T was my first turbocharged car and the turbo noises were similar. I was given this cool down tip by a friend that rally raced his 1.8T beetle. I had over 70K on my beetle when I traded up and it still had the punch...more then I have heard others in that odometer value having. And thats because of Turbo care.
When people are trading in their punchless turbo cars you will be blasting by them in yours. :-)
I would compare it to riding your clutch....ride your clutch...replace your clutch. Run the turbo hard (nothing wrong with that!)...no cool down...bye bye turbo punch before its time. Turbo burn-out. Literally!
Take care of it and it will perform all day long.
Happy Driving

Nothing like dredging up a 2 year old post...
Anyways, is anyone out there running a turbo timer? Or does the fan and pump do a sufficient job of cooling things down after shutoff? Having not had a turbo in over 12 years, it takes some re-training to remember not to just kill the ignition right away when I get to my destination(though I'm still in my break-in period, so it's not getting too much stress right now anyway). If anyone does have a timer, which brand did you go with, and where did you mount it?

I don't really think these cars need a turbo timer. They seem to be pretty efficient at dissapating the heat away from the turbo. If you were to ever go with a BT upgrade, then you might want to start thinking about getting a turbo timer.
