2009 a3
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. Purchased a used 2009 A3 about 2 weeks ago w/51k mi. It's in great condition. This is my first car in 14 years as I've owned 2 trucks over this time. Gas mileage is now doubled. I really like the car. It did have a leak after 1 week and the dealer fixed it(A/C high pressure switch). Also, had a Curt hitch installed for a bike rack and the shop killed one of my rear brake light bulbs that I replaced. Hopefully all the issues are worked out of it's system now.

The car is now giving me another issue. The problem seems to have started not long after I bought it. Most of the time when shifting from 2-1 when slowing/stopping there's a "clunking" sound. As the temp here has warmed back up it was doing it pretty bad yesterday. I did some research and found that allot of others had this issue and it's a faulty mechatronics unit or TCM. Took it to the dealer today and they wanted their mechanic to ride with me to experience it. He confirmed there was an issue. They are to call me back this afternoon to let me know the diagnosis. I've also found some info the s-tronic transmission may be covered under a 10yr/100k warranty. Hoping this is the case.
Recent update: VW has extended the warranty on all DSG or S-tronic transmission for 10 years/100,000 miles, transferable to subsequent owners for 2006-2009 model years. This covers the R32, Jetta, GTI, Eos, and Audi TT and A3 and only applies to a "limited production range", whatever that means. It's unrelated to the recall mentioned below. To see if your past repair or current car is covered you have to call the VW loyalty center at 1-800-444-8982. A .pdf copy of the warranty extension for DSG transmission letter that was sent to owners is to the right.

They said they could not find anything wrong with it. That a similar new A3 does the same thing. The downshift is not a hard downshift so maybe there isn't any major issue. But it was acting allot different on one drive a few days ago. The service log says "checked trans fluid and found ok. perf dtc's and readjusted clutch pack values of trans. no dtc's in engine and trans. test drove and found vehicle operating normal compared to similar vehicle." Back in the garage and hopefully will not have any more issues!
FYI, I called Audi customer support today just to see what warranties are left on the car. One of my main concerns is the transmission so I'm relieved to see this. Here is the info:
- Federal Emissions Longterm - 8yr/80k
- Corrosion - 12yr/unlim mi
- S-Tronic Transmission - 10yr/100k
- Intake Mainifold - 10yr/120k
- Fuel Injectors - 10yr/120k
Another update on the car, got in it this morning and it tried to start it but didn't have the juice. I tried charging the battery and it helped a bit but not enough to turn it over. Figured it was a weak or dying battery. I believe it's been in there since 2009(5yr). It was a Diehard with 615cca. Got a new Bosch premium battery for a good deal that has 760cca and it started right up like it was new. Going back now I should have realized from the sluggish starts the battery was starting to go. There were no prior warnings other than a sluggish turnover over the last few weeks.
I replaced the battery myself and the only thing that needed to be set was the clock. There were 2 dash lights that stayed on(Electronic stabilization program(ESP) and Electro-mechanical power assist) but after a short drive they went off.
Cheers, Terry
