Default A3 1.9tdi tempreture gauge not working?

Hi. I've just picked up a 2002 a3 1.9tdi and have noticed the tempreture gauge is not moving. After reading lots of info I convinced myself it was the tempreture sensor but changing it has hit fixed the problem. It does blow hot air so I guess it is actually getting warm and I also notice that the pipe going into the top of the rad is hot but the pipe coming out the bottom is cold? Can anybody advise as I can't afford to keep guessing and changing parts that don't need replacing. Thanks in advance.

As you know, diesels take a lot longer to get to normal operating temp. However if you are running it long enough and the bottom hose is still cold, then there is a problem. The coolant isn't circulating around the engine and the most common cause is the thermostat not opening.

Thanks for your help.

I've now changed the temp sensor and thermostat and although it will now get to tempreture, it takes about 15-20 miles!
