Default Audi A3 2.0 TDI 2004 - Whirring noise

Hi

I recently bought an '04 plate Audi A3 2.0 tdi , I had to get the DMF and clutch replaced after a couple weeks due to wear (93,000 miles). Since then I have noticed a whirring type noise which appears when the engine has warmed up and at lowish speeds of up to 45/50 mph.

The noise is on/off and is on for couple seconds and then goes off for a couple seconds then on then off, etc. The tempo of this changes relative to speed, i.e the faster i go, the faster the tempo.

Not sure whether it is related to the DMF replacement or maybe it's a turbo problem or something else.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Ben

Bump!

I'm getting the same problem. I've replaced the brake discs and pads, tyres, bearings, track rod ends and ball joints on both front wheels. Still having the problem.

The tracking seems fine, no pulling in any direction?

You'd think one of these things would have solved the problem. But no, still making that whirring noise. It's deafeningly loud on the motorway.

Ideas anyone?

Oh I get that in the motorway at about 70mph. On mine it sounds like ive got a flat tyre. I pulled over once thinking that's what I had but I hadnt but it sounds like its coming from the front n/s on mine.

Before you waste any money on bearings and tyres like I did, it is worth taking your car somewhere where they have a "Hunter Roadforce wheel balancer" and getting them to balance the wheels on this. I have read a few threads where this has resolved the issue completely. I don't know where you are located, but in the UK where I live it costs £12 per tyre at my local Hi-Q.

I have booked mine on for Thursday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Some info here on the difference between normal tyre balancing and Hunter Roadforce balancing.

Hunter Roadforce balancing sounds like it might do the trick.

Hi guys,

Reporting back about the roadforce wheel balance. Seems to have done the trick! The guy at Hi-Q advised the passenger side front tyre was wildly out of balance, despite it being replaced and balanced a week or so ago. He re-balanced it using the Hunter Roadforce balancer and so far it seems fine? I find it really odd that this was causing the problem, but hey, if that's fixed it for good then I can't complain!

Hope this helps you guys too! Nothing worse than a noise you can't rid from the car.

Hi there. I've searched high and low for Hi-Q garages in my area of West Yorkshire and the mechanics there haven't a clue. Are there any other machines that are as just as effective as this Road force?

I believe this is what is wrong with my car after your post leafsfan.

Much appreciated for your last reply too.
