Black taillights
Does anyone know what the laws in California are for having your taillights blacked out or tinted? I called CHP already and asked them but all they said was that they need to reflect “reddish.” Then I heard some rubbish about some guy who had tinted lights being sued by people who hit his car and claimed they couldn’t see his lights (not sure if thats true, sounds kind of bogus to me). I’m only asking because my car is white and has tinted windows and I think it would look really good and I see it on other cars pretty often. So if anyone has experience with this and thinks its a bad idea please let me know…and if thats the case then I have some tint for the taillights if anyone outside of California wants to buy them really cheap.
Just don't make them so dark that an innocent driver following in rainy, foggy, or dusty conditions can't see you easily. Agree completely with mattrazzo that if you do this change, you should run brighter bulbs to maintain the same intensity.
I just tinted the tail lights on my Lava Gray 3.2Q it look great. The red lights still show through with no problem.
You should check out the web site for Lamin X www.LAMIN-X.com. It costs approx. $60 and the film is pre-cut (I chose the "Smoke" tint but there is also a darker one called "Charcoal", I found the "Smoke" to be dark enough". I can e-mail you pics if you want.

I used to have blacked out tails on my SRT and got pulled over twice with fix its.. I just smoked my A3 tails very light and have no problems. Just don't go too dark or cops will just use it as an excuse to light you up.

Whats important is this sentence: (e) Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.

Here's a great CHP link that references tinted tail lights as well as other mods. Specifically you are talking about (24600 VC)

I just wish they made aftermarket lights for the US A3's and then I wouldn't have to worry about it...I hate the red even if they were clear and red it would be better...in my opinion.
