Bought an A3, need some peace of mind!
Hi All,
I just bought an A3 1.8T Quattro as my old car was gonna cost more than it was worth to fix...well thats how I convinced myself! Its a 99 model but I got a good price and its only done 18k I have attached an image. The car is superb and I really enjoy driving it however one thing has been bothering me. Bear in mind this is my first "proper" car had a little fiesta and a renault laguna before this! When I accelerate and let off or when I change gear I hear a noise which I presume is the turbo releasing air, however the release dosent sound smooth or particularly nice. Its not very loud and sometimes you dont hera it when chnaging gear always when accelerating and letting off though. Is quite hard to describe its sounds like "chhhchhhchhh" basically air released but not in one go and a bit mechanical lol. I will try and pay more attention to the exact noise lol, its quite hard to think back when you're not driving it! Anyhows is this sound alright? When I test drove it I didnt hear this and I drove it back 250 miles after buying it and aain I swear I would of heard it before thats my only concern that this is something that has only just started happening then again I had music on so might not of heard it on the drive home...Any comments appreciated!

That is the sound of the DV (diverter valve) releasing boost pressure. You might have an aftermarket DV, or air intake which would increase the sound volume. You'll hear it most when under heavy accleration and you let off the gas, or shift gears. The DV releases the built up pressure so you don't damage your turbo.
This is perfectly normal if you only hear the sound under these conditions. If you hear that sound under other circumstances then you might have a boost leak.
Welcome and Cheers!

Nice find and seriously low mileage! How many owners?
I'd echo what Chef says about it being the DV but how you're describing the noise it doesn't sound right. You wouldn't really notice the noise of the standard DV so I'm guessing aftermarket too. It's a popular mod for 1.8T's. Take off the engine cover and you're looking for something that looks like this http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/con...oduct=FMCL007Ptowards the back of the engine near the rear bulkhead. It may be shot or if it actually is one of the Forge items it may need servicing. You're in the UK and they'll send you a service kit for free. If it's not a Forge item then get one anyway. They're quality

Two previous owners with full service history, I trecked 250 miles to pick this thing up, on our railways its not fun, but the drive back was. Yeah I was thinking of popping into audi to to see if they could just road test to make sure. I dont think its aftermarket though, going by current owner who hardly used the car in the time they had it from 2003 although I gues the first owner may have fitted something.

I'm well out the way, live in Norwich is miles from anywhere You think they would charge just for a road test to check if the noise is anything to be concerned with?! I could just take it to a local place for that I guess.

Nearest (highly recommended) VAG specialist to you would be JabbaSport. They're just outside Peterborough.
A word of warning. If you do go only take as much money as you'll need. Temptation is a terrible thing.
